FLOW METER TIP
A typical four chair salon can use well over 100,000 litres of water a year – enough water to take a daily 15-minute shower for 10 years. Install a flow meter to monitor your usage, and save yourself some money by conserving water using other tips recommended in the virtual salon.
A dual-flush toilet uses two buttons or handles to flush different levels of water. Installing one could save you 15,500 litres of water per year – that’s 100 bathtubs! – and over €25 on your water bill every year.
DRIPPING TAP TIP
Think those leaky faucets don’t matter? Think again. Dripping taps can waste up to €12 worth of water per year, and a constantly running toilet can waste around 800 bath-tubs of water every year, costing hundreds of Euros. So, take the tip and fix the tap!
FLOW RESTRICTOR TIP
To reduce wasted water at the washing station, install a flow restrictor to decrease water consumption by up to 110,000 litres of water by year. That is enough water to run a sprinkler attachment on your hose two hours a day for two months. And don’t forget to switch off the tap while applying shampoo and conditioner! Bonus: flow restrictors can also be used in kitchens and bathrooms.
In most salons this simple fix will:
- Save over €300 every year in water and energy savings
- Save up to 3500 kWh every year
- Reduce up to 730 kg CO2 every year
A pricey but worthwhile long-term investment: install a rainwater collection system for €12,000. Rainwater can be used safely for cleaning laundry and for toilet flushes, saving around €100 in water costs per year.
